BOONE

Philadelphia has always been known for its raw, authentic talent. Artists that come from this entertainment jewel are adorned by greatness and a stellar work ethic. Such is the case with Philly’s latest and greatest Hip Hop artist, Boone. Marquis Boone was born and raised in South Philadelphia, PA. After playing college ball at Steven’s Technical College in Lancaster, PA, one would assume that Boone was a sure win for a career as a pro baller. Turns out that they were right, just not on the basketball court. Falling in love with music while in college led Boone to form the hip hop group Fly 4 Life.  Although short lived, the experience catapulted the young artist into the next phase of his life as a solo artist. It all started at a talent show in front of a small crowd at an event sponsored by Sneaker Villa in Philly. He won the opportunity to perform at Unity Day in front of a crowd of 50,000. Here he caught the ear of Wayne “Big Wayne” Montgomery, a bodyguard for Kidd Rock, Black Street and Teddy Riley.  This relationship permitted Boone to experience a national tour with Black Street and to work in the studio with Eric Williams of the group. Being inspired by his contemporaries such as Jay-Z and Philly’s own Beanie Siegal, Boone continues to align himself with people that see his greatness. Palmieri Jeans, a Philadelphia based clothing company, met the rising star and he can now be seen in some of their branding and promotional campaigns. They in turn support his shows and other musical efforts.
Last summer Boone’s club banger “Club Like” featured hip-hop super star Wacka Flacka and had a big impact on dance floors and radios across the globe.  He has followed suit with his latest single “Nanas” ft Gillie Da Kid, another base filled, catchy head knocker that is currently climbing the charts as well as taking the clubs by storm. As Boone’s music and likeness continues to expand beyond his hometown his golden personality and relentless talent continue to lead the way.  Soon you too will be able to find him on a radio, a dance floor or a stage near you.

Keli Nicole

Keli Nicole is described as an incredibly well-rounded singer/songwriter, with a musician’s ear. She has been privileged to work with and learn from some of the music industry’s greatest producers and writers of our time. Her phenomenal range of capabilities can take her into every genre of music, ranging from Gospel and R&B, to Country and Rock. Although goals have been reached, there is still much more to accomplish. Born and raised in Virginia Beach, Virginia and being mentored and later working with the likes of Missy Elliott and Timbaland, Keli Nicole, born Keli Nicole Price, was bound for number one status. With the perfect blend of vocals and penmanship Keli is growing into her destiny. In 1998, she co-wrote on Lil Mo’s first single entitled "5 Minutes". That same year, she wrote and sang on albums with Total (Kima, Keisha and Pam), Timbaland (Tim's Bio), Missy Elliott (Supa Dupa Fly), and Nicole Wray (Make It Hot). In addition, she wrote for the movie soundtrack Why Do Fools Fall In Love. She took a few years to better learn the business and to work on two projects of her own: her adorable children, Christopher and Shari. In 2002 she began commuting between Atlanta and Los Angeles and digging deeper into her craft. She returned with a vengeance, notably with songs arranged, produced and written by her on the 30 Years To Life movie soundtrack (2003), My Baby's Daddy movie soundtrack (I Give-2004), Angie Stones album, Stone Love ("You're Gonna Get It" -2004), Will Smiths album Lost and Found ("Loretta"-2005), the self-entitled project by B5 ("Let It Be"- 2005; Radio Disney Jungle Jams "Someday At Christmas" - 2005), the Disney animated movie Kronk's New Groove ("Let's Groove Tonight" -2005) and began the year 2006 with Joy Enriquez gospel release (Atmosphere of Heaven). In 2006, Beyonce released her first single from her second album B-Day, entitled "Deja Vu". The song was co-written by Keli Nicole and rose to the 1 spot on the Billboard charts. In November 2006, Tamia's album (Between Friends) was released in the United States, being first released in Africa. Keli has co-written two songs on this album, "The Way I Love You" and Tamia's 1st single "Can't get enough". In early 2007, Paris Bennett recorded and released her hit single “Ordinary Love” written by Keli Nicole and newcomer Boo Britt, produced by her great friend Jon Jon, who was also co-producer of DeJa Vu.  Feb 2007 brought on 3 Grammy Nominations for Ms. Price a win for Best Contemporary Album. The title of actress can also be added to the multi talented Keli Nicole. In March 2007, she completed filming her first major role in the indie film “Who Killed Bishop Brown” as Mother Mable.  She wrapped up 2007 and 2008 with projects that allowed her to fulfill a few dreams; 2 lullaby albums under the Music World Ent. label titled Baby Jamz, a children's album exec. produced by Solange and Matthew Knowles (available in Walmart Stores and www.babyjamz.com). She has also completed work on High School Jamz, The Best Of The Best, www.highschooljamz.com: an album that builds the esteem of youth and involves them in the creative process by allowing them to display their vocal abilities on every song. The end of 2008 and beginning of 2009 were met with family tragedy and personal triumph. Maggie Price and Barbara Pierce, both Keli’s grandmothers, passed within 30 days of each other from Colon and Stomach Cancer. Keli Nicole then decided to devote herself to not only educating others about awareness but also promoting change and purpose. She went back to college the day after her maternal grandmother died and is working on her Bachelors in Education, while simultaneously writing and recording her first solo studio album "Breakup Radio" (now available on all major online music retailers, iTunes, Amazon, etc.), as well as launching the “ Let’s B.E. Aware campaign and working on her next album, Live Free, slated for spring 2012 release. The single “Pushing” will be released winter 2011.

Indie Review Welcomes Rosalind !

Set your reminders and tune in!  See ya Saturday :)

Indie Review Radio – Hosted by Raychelle & C.Truth
12 pm to 1:30 pm
Call-in Number: (646) 478-5123

Rosalind

For many Jersey girls, the stigma of being a Garden State native can be overwhelming. The good news is that you can’t believe everything you see on television, and there are modern-day women in New Jersey who are breaking the current stereotype of big hair and leopard print accessories. Enter Rosalind, a young songwriter and entertainer who is carrying on the musical tradition of Jersey-born multi-talents like Lauryn Hill, Akon, Queen Latifah and Whitney Houston. A native of Essex County, New Jersey, Rosalind realized her talents when she wrote her first song at just 9-years-old. Her father was a club promoter who also sold and used drugs, and her mother was a Ford model-turned-mom who raised her children with as much structure and faith as she could. Throughout her childhood, Rosalind honed her vocals in church, recorded and performed at various venues in the Northeast region. At 16, Rosalind performed at the famed Apollo Theater in Harlem, and went on to get a full scholarship at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Rosalind acquired a great amount of knowledge from Berklee, and later moved back to New Jersey to begin creating her own musical empire. In 2008, she worked with director and graphics specialist Roc Davis on her first music videos “Myspace” and “Rydah,” which were featured on Rosalind’s first digital album Ready. In 2010, Rosalind teamed with Design Digital Films for her “Hustler” video, which featured rapper French Montana. She feels confident that her passion to create has grown immensely in the past three years, and draws from a variety of influences in her songwriting, including Mariah Carey, Erykah Badu, Death Cab For Cutie, Ne-Yo, Frank Ocean, Alanis Morissette, Missy Elliot, Drake and Kendrick Lamar. “My music brings vulnerability to music lovers,” explains Rosalind. “I feel that a lot of artists are extremely scared to be vulnerable, like they are unbreakable. I try to give the listener a cinematic experience through my writing. Rosalind enjoys repping New Jersey in a positive way, and feels that there is always room for more talent to grow in the area. “I’m from the same area that Queen Latifah, Whitney Houston and Faith Evans are from – Essex County,” says Rosalind. “My father played basketball with Whitney Houston’s brothers. This area is very small and everyone knows everyone. Despite all of the amazing talent here, we seem to be overlooked, and I’d like to be a part of bringing people worldwide more of what we’ve got out here.” As she moves forward in her career, Rosalind knows there is potential for growth in everything she does. Despite a tough upbringing, she’s managed to maintain a positive outlook on life and music. Her once drug-addicted father is now a minister, inspiring others to get their lives together. Now Rosalind hopes that others will draw inspiration from her movement in music. “Through all of my experiences, I have become a well-rounded writer,” she asserts. “No matter how different each song may be from the other, they all come from my heart. I’ve invested in and managed my career thus far, and I’ve had computer hackers take away everything I worked for. Through it all, I am strong, and I’ve been humbled. I thank God, because I’ve finally found myself, and I’m still hungry and eager to learn.”

Tim Terry

If Soul is dead, then the solution is Tim Terry. A native of Memphis, Tennessee, whose musical influences were Rhythm and Blues' disciples of Soul, Donny Hathaway, Marvin Gaye, Willie Hutch, Al Green and Isaac Hayes. Their spirits led a young Tim Terry into the river's bank to be baptized in funk and chosen to spread the gospel of soul revival. In an industry where talent is not appreciated or respected, Tim Terry is determined to bring the honesty and purity of music back from the dead. "Music can be political and moving without celebrating hate." His music transcends musical boundaries and ethic regions and does not forget to honor love. When you think about the evolution of Memphis’s soulful sound, think of The Tim Terry Experience. An astounding singer, songwriter and producer, Tim Terry tiptoes the fine line of preserving tradition and enhancing it to reach far into the future. With the newly-released sophomore album, “Born II Live,” Terry harkens the funk of bands like the BarKays, the blues of Beale Street and the soul of the city. After having his 2005 debut album, “The Tim Terry Experience” reach No. 2 on the Soul charts in the UK, Terry is poised for worldwide recognition. The rhythm & soul album is overflowing with authentic life lessons, wrapped in a soulfully funky and romantic package sure to make you move and groove with a purpose. Co-produced by Terry and Jonathan Richmond (Angie Stone, Lalah Hathaway), Terry meticulously wrote and arranged every song on Born II Live. Terry states that the album’s sound is “stripped down to its bare essence” so fans can focus more on the message each song conveys. More than just music, Terry takes you on a journey with words and sound, with layers of instrumentation and vocal harmonies, leveled by his signature voice – an undeniable combination known as The Tim Terry Experience.

Indie Review welcomes Yewande !

Set your reminders and tune in!  See ya Saturday :)

Indie Review Radio – Hosted by Raychelle & C.Truth
12 pm to 1:30 pm
Call-in Number: (646) 478-5123

YEWANDE

Born with an unusual name that is eclipsed only by her talent, Yewande (pronounced E-wán-day) has been recognized as one of the most sought after independent artists in the world. After nearly a 5 year hiatus from the recording industry, she is back to finish telling her story on her highly anticipated album, “Rebirth.” Blessed with a voice “heard only once in a lifetime”, her message is unapologetically the same - to speak universal truths about issues that many artists shy away from – poverty, war, religion, love – but while she still proudly rocks the unique brand of Alternative Soul that first captivated fans and critics alike, something is profoundly different. With original songs that include titles like “Tomorrow”, “Skin”, “Cold” and “Criminal”, her sound is bigger, bolder, and if at all possible even more confident than her early award-winning songwriting (www.yewande.com). “Rebirth” reflects the journey of a lioness who’s been patiently waiting to capture her prey. Her target is squarely aimed at your heart and based on insider response, will undoubtedly land in heavy rotation on your mP3.
Much like her progressive contemporaries - Lenny Kravitz, BOB, Outkast, Black Eyed Peas, Meshell N'degeocello, Seal, Kina - Yewande's music continues to defy boundaries. She shares, "my music is written from the rollercoaster called life, colored with shades of joy, loss, struggle and triumph. Soul, Rock, Hip-Hop are all simply a reflection of real human emotion so how do you categorize that? I'm all of these things." With songs written by Yewande, arrangements lead by guitar phenom Brandon Thomas and music by Angie Stone's powerhouse band Soultron, “Rebirth” is a welcomed departure from music that has become lost in a sea of predictable lyrics and beats. In an industry where image and formula driven artistry have so often trumped talent, listeners may be wondering if this new sound was inspired by her abrupt departure. Perhaps its dedicated to a legion of fans that demanded to hear more even when Yewande wasn’t certain she had any more to give. Or is it simply her birth name, which in the Yoruba dialect of Africa means “reincarnation of mother”, that predicted her inevitable return to finish what she started? Soon enough, listeners will be able to decide for themselves, but for now we’re just glad to know that that the road less traveled has lead her back to the music that the world has been waiting to hear.

Indie Review welcomes Candice Anitra !

Set your reminders and tune in!  See ya Saturday :)

Indie Review Radio – Hosted by Raychelle & C.Truth
12 pm to 1:30 pm
Call-in Number: (646) 478-5123

CANDICE ANITRA

Candice Anitra hates how social constructs put people in boxes, including rigidly corrugated musical categories. Embodying the subtle rapture of Joan Armatrading, the robust confidence of Meshell Ndegeocello, and the thespian gender inquisition of Cheryl Dunye, the left-of-soul singer-songwriter bucks convention rather than live as a square peg in a round hole. Hailing from Philadelphia, the Brooklyn-based songstress was reared in a musical family whose voices were limited to home and church. When the adolescent impetus to find her own voice struck, she was stifled by her father’s telling her she “wasn’t ready.”
After high school, Candice set sail for New York University’s heralded Tisch School of the Arts. There, she discovered her vocal prowess upon receiving accolades for her performance in dramatic roles that called for her to sing. By 2006, a post-collegiate Candice had written a stage play, instructed a youth theater workshop, and assumed lead vocal duties for a local NYC band. Though the band dissolved, former classmates Ion & Sanford, who as Force Theory Productions scored award-winning films Favela Rising and Jesus Camp, gave Candice some music to write to – her entry into songwriting – and jumped to produce Candice’s maiden solo musical voyage, the 2008 EP Easier.
During the tracking of Easier at his Studio G, Joel Hamilton (Soulive, Matisyahu, Blakroc, Talib Kweli, Nina Simone) swooned over Candice’s single, “Objectify,” and he readily signed on to helm Candice’s 2010 full-length debut, Bark Then Bite, a critically acclaimed odyssey of dynamic sound and talent. The album included a royal remix of “Objectify” from producer Scotty Hard, a track that flips the script on Candice’s feeling degraded by men’s lewd behavior towards her on city streets, and the video for which plays with the concept of gender roles and has become a controversial conversation piece garnering thousands of views.
Most recently, Candice has headed back to Studio G with Hamilton to record her remarkable sophomore effort, Big Tree. Backed by an acoustic guitar loop and earthy bass line, Candice uses the title track to highlight the parallels between the human being and one of nature’s most sturdy species of flora. The supercharged lead single “Love Sick” probes the media’s influences on youth sexualization, while the tender a cappella ballad “I Hear Music” is a breathtaking ode to the enchanting musicality of a lover’s voice. Collectively and individually, the tracks on Big Tree are a mellifluous yet audacious blend of the delicious oft overlooked spaces between the genres. Taking the emotional bumps in the road and sewing a thread of commonality through them using euphonic bits of this and that is a sacred pastiche art that Candice Anitra has mastered simply by looking within.

AZANIA

Few people are born with the gift of instantly touching people's hearts with their voice. Azania is one of them. Originally from Sierra Leone, West Africa, this multi-cultural artist was born and raised in the U.S. & in Geneva, Switzerland. From the age of 6 she knew that singing was her calling and she loved seeing the joy her voice brought to people. "It's a beautiful way to share emotions and connect with
people on a deep level" she says.
Azania's captivating voice, powerful energy and positive charisma make her a phenomenal performer and a joy to see on stage. She has performed hundreds of concerts around Europe and in Asia, and looks forward to travelling worldwide. "It's always wonderful and fascinating to see how universal music is. It surpasses so many cultural boundaries and speaks straight to the heart". She has also been invited to sing in major music festivals, such as the world-renowned Montreux Jazz and the Paléo festival. In Paris, she won first prize in the French T.V. competition 'Graines de Star' on M6TV. Broadcast to over 4 million viewers, it was the first French show similar to 'American Idol' and 'X-Factor'.
A true cameleon, Azania loves exploring various facets of her voice in different styles of music. During her 12 years+ of classical opera voice training, she sang in many different bands of not only soul and funk, but also jazz to disco, electro/house to gospel, reggae to musical theater. For her upcoming album, several songs are inspired by the groovy soul and funk era of the 1970's. However Azania's compositions evolve from diverse musical influences. “I simply compose what I feel, and I’m inspired by different styles. To me what’s most important is the message and emotion of each song. If you feel it, that’s all that counts”. Reflecting her warm personality, Azania's lyrics are often enriched with uplifting and positive messages, and her highly-anticipated debut album will be released in 2011.

MAIMOUNA YOUSSEF

Maimouna “Mumu Fresh” Youssef is a Grammy nominated seasoned singer, emcee, songwriter and poet. She received a Grammy nomination for her contribution on the Roots hit “Don’t Feel Right” in 2007 for best rap song. She has swapped musical licks with such artists as Angelique Kidjo, Brian Wilson’s band, Big Daddy Kane, Nas, Dead Prez, Wilco, Zap Mama, Cody Chestnut, Martin Luther, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Mos Def, and Talib Kweli. Maimouna has also rocked the stages of many renowned venues such as Denver Colorado ‘s Red Rocks Amphitheater, New York City’s Radio City Music Hall, Switzerland’s Moniteau Jazz Festival, and The Carter Baron Amphitheater in Washington, DC. Her musical endeavors were a springboard for Youssef to make her big screen debut in Dave Chapelle’s hip hop documentary “Block Party.” Maimouna released her first Solo EP entitled Black Magic Woman March 1, 2011 and is currently working on her inaugural solo full length LP.
A Baltimore native born into a family of exceptional artists, Maimouna began performing traditional African and Native American songs on stage with her family at the age of 5. As a youth she joined the Baltimore/Washington based musical theater group called Uprising. Maimouna toured nationally with Uprising as a lead vocalist. In addition, the young Youssef played a leading role in the Broadway musical “Once on this Island”. Some of her other theatrical experiences include the original trio showcase “Three Generationz” that consisted of Maimouna Youssef, her mother, Nataska Hummingbird, and her grandmother, Mountain Eagle Woman (now deceased).  Maimouna still continues to perform with Three Generationz – now comprised of Maimouna, her mother and Navasha Daya of Fertile Ground.
At the tender age of 16 Maimouna formed the jazz/hip-hop/funk/ band along with her cousin Omari “AzIz” Forman-Bey known as Cirius B. In the spring of 2003 the duo completed the recording of their independent debut album entitled “Subversive Activity”. Also in 2003, Maimouna Youssef won the title of “Baltimore’s Idol” and began appearing frequently on Baltimore’s Fox 45 morning show as well as every major local radio station.  Cirius B’s unique sound found it’s way to Grammy Award winning producer James Poyser and in 2004, Maimouna and Omari relocated to Philadelphia to work with him.  Maimouna’s dreams began to materialize when she was introduced to many of her favorite and most respected artists including the legendary hip-hop band The Roots. The Roots recognized Maimouna’s raw talent and was asked to sing lead vocals on their new hit single at the time, “Don’t Feel Right.” Shortly thereafter, Maimouna was packing her bags to join the Roots on their world tour.  It was during this tour that Maimouna earned a name for herself as a world-class vocalist and emcee.
