YEWANDE

Born with an unusual name that is eclipsed only by her talent, Yewande (pronounced E-wán-day) has been recognized as one of the most sought after independent artists in the world. After nearly a 5 year hiatus from the recording industry, she is back to finish telling her story on her highly anticipated album, “Rebirth.” Blessed with a voice “heard only once in a lifetime”, her message is unapologetically the same - to speak universal truths about issues that many artists shy away from – poverty, war, religion, love – but while she still proudly rocks the unique brand of Alternative Soul that first captivated fans and critics alike, something is profoundly different. With original songs that include titles like “Tomorrow”, “Skin”, “Cold” and “Criminal”, her sound is bigger, bolder, and if at all possible even more confident than her early award-winning songwriting (www.yewande.com). “Rebirth” reflects the journey of a lioness who’s been patiently waiting to capture her prey. Her target is squarely aimed at your heart and based on insider response, will undoubtedly land in heavy rotation on your mP3.
Much like her progressive contemporaries - Lenny Kravitz, BOB, Outkast, Black Eyed Peas, Meshell N'degeocello, Seal, Kina - Yewande's music continues to defy boundaries. She shares, "my music is written from the rollercoaster called life, colored with shades of joy, loss, struggle and triumph. Soul, Rock, Hip-Hop are all simply a reflection of real human emotion so how do you categorize that? I'm all of these things." With songs written by Yewande, arrangements lead by guitar phenom Brandon Thomas and music by Angie Stone's powerhouse band Soultron, “Rebirth” is a welcomed departure from music that has become lost in a sea of predictable lyrics and beats. In an industry where image and formula driven artistry have so often trumped talent, listeners may be wondering if this new sound was inspired by her abrupt departure. Perhaps its dedicated to a legion of fans that demanded to hear more even when Yewande wasn’t certain she had any more to give. Or is it simply her birth name, which in the Yoruba dialect of Africa means “reincarnation of mother”, that predicted her inevitable return to finish what she started? Soon enough, listeners will be able to decide for themselves, but for now we’re just glad to know that that the road less traveled has lead her back to the music that the world has been waiting to hear.

CANDICE ANITRA

Candice Anitra hates how social constructs put people in boxes, including rigidly corrugated musical categories. Embodying the subtle rapture of Joan Armatrading, the robust confidence of Meshell Ndegeocello, and the thespian gender inquisition of Cheryl Dunye, the left-of-soul singer-songwriter bucks convention rather than live as a square peg in a round hole. Hailing from Philadelphia, the Brooklyn-based songstress was reared in a musical family whose voices were limited to home and church. When the adolescent impetus to find her own voice struck, she was stifled by her father’s telling her she “wasn’t ready.”
After high school, Candice set sail for New York University’s heralded Tisch School of the Arts. There, she discovered her vocal prowess upon receiving accolades for her performance in dramatic roles that called for her to sing. By 2006, a post-collegiate Candice had written a stage play, instructed a youth theater workshop, and assumed lead vocal duties for a local NYC band. Though the band dissolved, former classmates Ion & Sanford, who as Force Theory Productions scored award-winning films Favela Rising and Jesus Camp, gave Candice some music to write to – her entry into songwriting – and jumped to produce Candice’s maiden solo musical voyage, the 2008 EP Easier.
During the tracking of Easier at his Studio G, Joel Hamilton (Soulive, Matisyahu, Blakroc, Talib Kweli, Nina Simone) swooned over Candice’s single, “Objectify,” and he readily signed on to helm Candice’s 2010 full-length debut, Bark Then Bite, a critically acclaimed odyssey of dynamic sound and talent. The album included a royal remix of “Objectify” from producer Scotty Hard, a track that flips the script on Candice’s feeling degraded by men’s lewd behavior towards her on city streets, and the video for which plays with the concept of gender roles and has become a controversial conversation piece garnering thousands of views.
Most recently, Candice has headed back to Studio G with Hamilton to record her remarkable sophomore effort, Big Tree. Backed by an acoustic guitar loop and earthy bass line, Candice uses the title track to highlight the parallels between the human being and one of nature’s most sturdy species of flora. The supercharged lead single “Love Sick” probes the media’s influences on youth sexualization, while the tender a cappella ballad “I Hear Music” is a breathtaking ode to the enchanting musicality of a lover’s voice. Collectively and individually, the tracks on Big Tree are a mellifluous yet audacious blend of the delicious oft overlooked spaces between the genres. Taking the emotional bumps in the road and sewing a thread of commonality through them using euphonic bits of this and that is a sacred pastiche art that Candice Anitra has mastered simply by looking within.

AZANIA

Few people are born with the gift of instantly touching people's hearts with their voice. Azania is one of them. Originally from Sierra Leone, West Africa, this multi-cultural artist was born and raised in the U.S. & in Geneva, Switzerland. From the age of 6 she knew that singing was her calling and she loved seeing the joy her voice brought to people. "It's a beautiful way to share emotions and connect with
people on a deep level" she says.
Azania's captivating voice, powerful energy and positive charisma make her a phenomenal performer and a joy to see on stage. She has performed hundreds of concerts around Europe and in Asia, and looks forward to travelling worldwide. "It's always wonderful and fascinating to see how universal music is. It surpasses so many cultural boundaries and speaks straight to the heart". She has also been invited to sing in major music festivals, such as the world-renowned Montreux Jazz and the Paléo festival. In Paris, she won first prize in the French T.V. competition 'Graines de Star' on M6TV. Broadcast to over 4 million viewers, it was the first French show similar to 'American Idol' and 'X-Factor'.
A true cameleon, Azania loves exploring various facets of her voice in different styles of music. During her 12 years+ of classical opera voice training, she sang in many different bands of not only soul and funk, but also jazz to disco, electro/house to gospel, reggae to musical theater. For her upcoming album, several songs are inspired by the groovy soul and funk era of the 1970's. However Azania's compositions evolve from diverse musical influences. “I simply compose what I feel, and I’m inspired by different styles. To me what’s most important is the message and emotion of each song. If you feel it, that’s all that counts”. Reflecting her warm personality, Azania's lyrics are often enriched with uplifting and positive messages, and her highly-anticipated debut album will be released in 2011.
